Staying On

While many people in the UK choose to leave school as early as they can, often without taking A' Levels, other choose to stay on and take some qualifications in the hope that it will enable them to be more competitive in the UK jobs market.

Many people do take their GCSEs and A' levels and a large percentage of school leavers do go on to take some form of further education either at university or in the form of a BTEC or other qualification in the trades at the local higher education college.

But is it really worth staying on to take exams? After all it takes a large amount of time – and money – to go all the way through higher education. I ask because of the high costs now associated with going to university. Even with financial assistance it can cost a parent around eight thousand pounds a year and this is set to rise with the tuition fees debacle. (more...)

Why Better Education Could Save The NHS Millions

The general public's knowledge of basic health issues is completely astounding. We have the government moaning and whining about the fact that the cost for the NHS is soaring at a record rate, year-on-year, yet they do not seem to be inclined to address this issue at the grass routes.

People are becoming increasingly worried about our National Heath Service and are concerned by the fact that so many types of care are being withdrawn altogether - rather defeating the object of this service - and they turn to medical insurance policies as a viable alternative.

The government throw additional money into this campaign and that, but from what I can see, they are still not hitting the spot. I genuinely feel that all school pupils should be forced to take biology to a stronger degree and there needs to be a very strong emphasis on human biology, nutrition and general fitness. (more...)

Why are School Leavers Getting Smarter?

This is a question that continues to baffle the highest ranking people that are connected with our education system. As they try to work out exactly why it is that school leavers gain more and more C grades and above each year, they scratch their heads and fail to come up with the answer.

Is it down to the fact that the education system is better than ever now? That really is very doubtful. Is it down to more and more elaborate ways of educating our school children. Perhaps with more interactive methods of teaching and puzzle games like bloons being used? Again, that is highly doubtful.

I have a theory as to why this is happening to a small degree, each and every year, and it is so basic, people will kick themselves when they read it. It is simply down to the fact that our species is continuing to evolve. (more...)

The Importance of the English Language to Foreign Students

There is absolutely no getting away from the fact that English remains the most popular language in the world today. Although countries like China are becoming very dominant in the way they are doing business worldwide, Mandarin really is not catching on - perhaps this is because it is too far removed from European languages and we fail to identify with it.

With this in mind, many European countries insist on students studying English to a very proficient level. It is not uncommon for those who struggle with the language to study an ingles en verano which if you speak Spanish, you will know this means an English course during the summer.

Indeed this is very popular with foreign students and it means that they can experience the United Kingdom, first hand, whilst taking in the language at the same time. This is often considered to be the best way to truly grasp any language - by immersing yourself into that country and being forced to speak the language. (more...)

Immerse Yourself in English

Living in a new country where no-one speaks the same language can be a very daunting experience. For foreigners arriving into the UK to live and work it can be a time of immense stress. Often this can leave foreigners feeling isolated and lonely.

The best way to cope is to use the opportunity to learn the local language. There is no better time to learn a language than when you are already living within a country that uses the language. Every day can be a school day in this instance and you will never be short of someone to practise your new language with.

As a starting point it is a good idea to find a local intensive English language course such as the MovingOn Courses. These courses restrict learners to speaking in English throughout the class. Whilst this may seem extremely daunting at the outset it is also the best way to learn English quickly. (more...)
