The general public's knowledge of basic health issues is completely astounding. We have the government moaning and whining about the fact that the cost for the NHS is soaring at a record rate, year-on-year, yet they do not seem to be inclined to address this issue at the grass routes.
People are becoming increasingly worried about our National Heath Service and are concerned by the fact that so many types of care are being withdrawn altogether - rather defeating the object of this service - and they turn to medical insurance policies as a viable alternative.
The government throw additional money into this campaign and that, but from what I can see, they are still not hitting the spot. I genuinely feel that all school pupils should be forced to take biology to a stronger degree and there needs to be a very strong emphasis on human biology, nutrition and general fitness.
Of course, even if people are better educated in health, they may still choose to completely ignore advice, but on the whole, statistics would fall sharply and in the long term, the NHS would end up saving literally billions of pounds; especially as the more educated generation do not require anything like the level of care the less knowledgeable population require.
Education in health is the most important subject that any school pupil would ever need - after all, we are talking about educating them in living a longer and healthier life. Now that is a damn sight more important that English or Maths, any day!
